Ethnological Museum
Ethnological MuseumThe Ethnological Museum belongs to the National Museum in Berlin. With over 500.000 ethnographic and archaeological objects from all continents, it is one the most important ethnographic museums world wide. It is located in Berlin-Dahlem.
The music archive of the Ethnological Museum -- officially: the Department for Ethnomusicology, Media-Technology and Berlin Phonogramm-Archiv -- is the successor of the Phonogramm-Archiv founded by Carl Stumpf in September 1900. In 1999 the cylinder collection of the Phonogramm-Archiv was included on the UNESCO memory of the world list. Today the department mainly collects
- audiovisual sources and
- musical instruments
which document the music cultures of the world.
Recently, the music archive participated in the digital library projects DISMARC and ethnoArc.
